This study examined the research methods applied to published academic journals in the area of Social Sciences and/or Humanities from the field of English linguistics by the University of Panama between 2018 and 2020. The main eligibility criterion was original research, not essays or other types of reports. The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) Protocol was used to select the sample resulting in 19 articles from eight journals that were analyzed under Grounded Theory criteria. It was found, on the one hand, that most of the published studies (58%) used quantitative methods, focusing on studies of an exploratory and descriptive nature. Surveys and questionnaires were the instruments and/or techniques most commonly used in these quantitative studies. On the other hand, the qualitative research methods used (16%) were characterized by the use of interviews, recorded and documentary analysis. These findings underscore the need for methodological diversity in linguistic research, and these results can serve as a starting point for future studies that seek to expand and diversify research methods used in the field of English linguistics.
