The relationship between learning and reading comprehension, addressed in this research, was aimed at finding solutions to some of the difficulties faced by eighth graders of Instituto Fermín Naudeau High School (IFN), City of Panama. To do so, were applied five of the twelve reading strategies used by Deborah Adcock and her collaborators, who through guiding questions, manage to identify the comprehension of the fundamental contents of a text, thus contributing to the student’s intellectual growth.
The applied methodology consisted in identifying and distinguishing the main deficiencies that students present in reading comprehension, for it a simple sample of60 students was applied, out of a total of 165 that make up the eighth grade of the IFN. It consisted in administering a pretest and a posttest to the selected students, which were distributed in two groups, one Experimental-A and the other Control-B. The results found allowed to contrast the students’ responses of the experimental group in relation to the control group, finding that the students of the Experimental Group A increased their levels in reading comprehension.
