Abstract

The article addresses the issue of the challenges of Higher education in Africa and within the framework of globalization. Regarding the systems of Higher Education, some of the challenges derived from the impact of globalization that Sub-Saharan Academy will have to assume in the global society of the Century XXI are the decolonization of the education and learning processes; the (re)evaluation of traditional values and endogenous knowledges; the promotion of critical thought and free Higher education; the development of the continuous, night and distance education; the strengthening of the mechanisms and processes of convalidation and homologation of diplomas and degrees; the restructuring and flexibilization of the university management (University’s administrative and managerial structure); the greater articulation of teaching with research; the strengthening of investigation and postgraduate programs; the intensification of the necessary role of the State; the strengthening of the university and the public education; the internationalization of the university through the cooperation and the interuniversitary networks, with emphasis on the horizontal or South-South academic cooperation (Africa - Asia - Latin America and the Caribbeans). The collection of information captured analytically and critically in this work is due to research logics, derived from the combination of our experiences lived as native of Africa and graduates of African universities; with the knowledge accumulated in the field of African studies that are articulated around a bibliographic review and an exegetical analysis of texts related to the subject of Higher education in Africa.
