Abstract

Study techniques are educational tools that allow the development of the maximum capacities of students in their educational training process. Previous research has shown the absence of adequate educational techniques in university students. The aim of the study was to design strategies to increase knowledge and motivation on study techniques that contribute to improve academic performance in first-time undergraduate nursing students. The study followed a mixed qualitative-quantitative approach using participatory action research. The sample consisted of 10 professors and 63 students. An ad hoc qualitative interview and the Study Habits and Techniques Questionnaire were applied. Mean difference tests were used to relate the different dimensions of study habits and techniques and academic performance. The results showed that habits (general attitude towards study, study place, physical condition and work plan) and study techniques (study techniques, exams-exercises and assignments) presented statistically significant correlations with academic performance (habits, 0.672, p < 0.001; study techniques, 0.385, p = 0.002). As a conclusion, the need for training in adequate study techniques from the beginning of the university career is highlighted, since adequate study techniques increase academic performance.
