Abstract

The main time series of unemployment in Panama is published by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) since 1963 from the Labor Market Survey, formerly the Continuous Household Survey, however, there are some years for which there is no information, specifically, 1980, 1981 and 1990. This situation prevents the use of this series for long-term analysis of the Panamanian economy. The paper uses data from the Population Census and simple statistical methods to provide estimates for these years, from which a simple average is obtained, which allows a more accurate figure. Unemployment rates of 8.1%, 8.2%, and 15.1% were found for the years indicated, and the individual estimates are close to each other in most cases. When compared with the results obtained from the Census, the 1980 figure (8.0%) is reasonable; however, the 1990 figure (11.6%) does not appear representative. The years analyzed represent considerably different situations in the Panamanian labor market, with the estimate for 1990 practically double that for 1980 and 1981.
