Electrocution in primates has been reported in different parts of the world. Approximately 20 primate species are being affected as a result of the degradation of their habitats that generate problems such as the electrocution of arboreal mammals. In Costa Rica it has registered this problem since 1997 in squirrel monkey Saimiri oerstedii, however, at the present, the records provided by SalveMonos show a great affectation for howler monkeys Alouatta palliata, where 606 monkeys have been electrocuted in the last 10 years. These accidents can end in immediate death, death by hit after falling from the electric shock and survivals with collateral damages. The transformation of a more sustainable electricity grid and inter-institutional coordination may be the corrective measures that mitigate this problem that has been developing in many parts of the world.
