Abstract

Planarians (Tricladida: Geoplanidae) are exotic cosmopolitan organisms and some species are pests of vermiculture. In Cerro Punta, the main horticultural area of Panama, Bipalium kewense Moseley, 1878, characterized by its hammer-shaped head, longitudinal dark bands and an open collar behind the head, was previously reported. On December 18, 2023, in the same location, a planarian different from B. kewense was found, so the objective of the study was to identify said species. The specimen was preserved in 70% ethanol and morphological characteristics were reviewed in the laboratory by consulting specialized literature. According to the results, the planarian studied corresponds to the species Dolichoplana striata Moseley, 1877; ocher in color, with six longitudinal bands (narrow medial pair or absent in juvenile specimens as was the case), 4.5 cm long. As far as is known, this represents a new record of Geoplanidae for Panama.
