Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the dire state of public health in Panama. The high number of infections and deaths have placed us in a shameful place in the world ranking. Despite the fact that the ruling classes of Panama boast that we are “the Dubai of Central America”, our public health system has proven in the pandemic to be terrible. The COVID-19 pandemic has conclusively demonstrated two things that have been being done wrong in Panama during the last 30 years: the weakening of the primary care system and the shortage of health personnel in relation to the population, and in particular, of specialists in different branches of medicine.
