Abstract

The Scolytinae are one of the most important forest pests. Trade has had a great importance in its distribution and establishment in the world. Exotic species represent a potential risk for the forest assets of Panama and Central America. The Panama Canal is a point of interest in phytosanitary surveillance due to the arrival of a large quantity of merchandise of agricultural or forestry origin with the potential to carry pests from all over the world. Emphasizing the interest in determining the species of Scolytinae associated with ports and warehouses, this study aims to establish which species of Scolytinae are found in the cities of Colón and Panama, which of these highlights agricultural or forestry importance and which have not been reported for the country. Thirty-six eight-cone Lindgren-type traps were installed within the Phytozoosanitary Surveillance Zone of the Panama Canal, 18 in each city, dividing half into ports and customs facilities. These were primed with two types of semiochemicals: ethanol and ?-pinene as kairomones and the Ips typographus pheromone. Each semiochemical was placed in each location. One year of collection was completed, data collection began in November 2006 through October 2007. This study reports Ambrosiodmus obliquus (LeConte), Coptoborus ricini (Eggers), Xyleborus bispinatus Eichhoff, Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff), Cryptocarenus seriatus Eggers, Coccotrypes advena Blandford, C. vulgaris (Eggers), Dendrocranulus tardulus Wood, D. tardus Schedl, and Scolytopsis puncticollis Blandford as new records for Panama.
