This Article discusses the importance of not disregarding the problems first year students face, particularly at the University of Panama, and the negative consequences derived from it, as has been explained in books, research or articles that describe the possible causes of such a situation, as well as it include some suggestions and proposals to reduce the negative effects that produces facing an unknown environment that, in general, does not correspond to the academic skills demanded in higher learning. The Article exemplifies some responses that have been designed in the international environment to promote the permanence and reduce rates of abandonment, dropout; improve the academic performance and completion of university studies, and it includes an estimation about the state of the situation of this problem at the University of Panama. Finally, it proposes some lines of action to raise awareness on those responsible for the dynamic of first year students.
