Abstract

Argumentative writing is a writing style comprising rhetorical moves that follow patterns defined in light of the textual typology. This is persuasive, focused on ideas, and uses comparisons, differences, and similarities between ideas for argumentative development. Teaching writing in a second language, English in this case, is a challenge due to its complexity. Therefore, the appropriation of new paradigms taken from the literature on teaching writing is necessary. This has traditionally been done as product-oriented, process-oriented writing, and more recently as the teaching of post-process writing. This article defends post-process writing from a higher-level teaching perspective. It is presented as a pedagogical option for the incorporation of free and open technological tools such as Virtual Writing Tutor, a powerful online editor. The incorporation of open and free technological tools for argumentative writing in English is relevant since they are beneficial for all parties involved in the process. Likewise, they empower and educate students by holding them accountable for the importance of the quality of their writing.
