Abstract

Fecal indicator bacteria were extracted from the sands of the wet zones of El Rompío and Los Guayaberos beaches, Panama, through the multiple-tube fermentation technique, on both sides of the groyne which separates the beaches, with monthly samples between July 2013 and January 2014. Likewise, granulometric, sedimentological, morphodynamical, and oceanographic variables were determined. associated with the annual erosion and accretion processes on the beaches. In spite of the fact that the bacterial load is equal on both beaches, it was found, through multivariable statistical procedures, that the variables chosen explain the presence of the fecal bacteria Indicators, and the processes of erosion, accretion, and a mixture of them present individual characteristics on each beach, and the bacterial load showed high dependence upon these processes.
