Abstract

Pre-Hispanic societies in Panamá Oeste, as well as others in the vicinity, distributed their daily activities around the rivers and their basins. This in order to supply themselves with water and to carry out agricultural tasks. The objective of this research was the macro-spatial study of the archaeological sites distributed in the current districts of Arraiján and La Chorrera in the province of Panamá Oeste in the Republic of Panama. In this article we share the preliminary results about the societies that settled there, between approximately 850 - 1000 AD. The methodology consisted of archaeological survey, material and geographic analysis, review of archaeological reports and a visit to the Municipal Museum of La Chorrera to learn first-hand about lithic and ceramic materials. Together, these findings allowed us to understand the spatial distribution of the pre-Hispanic societies of the proposed period and to infer the implications of the settlement patterns chosen by these indigenous societies. The selection of the habitat by these humans and the archaeological materials recovered, allow us to propose to sedentary groups of farmers, who like those of the Central Region or "Gran Cocle Tradition" of the last pre-Columbian period, were selecting medium and low basins, related to good lands for crops and a soft topography. These characteristics coincide with the findings made for this research from the methodology used. This leads us to propose that the same was happening in the districts of Arraiján and La Chorrera.
