Abstract

Underwater archaeology is a young discipline that was born in the 20th century, when techniques for the study of sunken vessels underwater were proposed and this led to its conceptual development, allowing the study of different types of archaeological sites, not only in the sea but also in other bodies of water.

This article aims to put into context the origin and development of the underwater archaeology from the first interventions to recover objects to its consolidation as a scientific discipline.
