Social media disinformation has become a global phenomenon that challenges the credibility of traditional and digital media. This review article explores the impact of disinformation, the strategies employed by malicious actors, and the responses of digital media and platforms to counter it. Recent studies on the subject are analysed, highlighting the effects on public opinion, political polarization and erosion of confidence in journalism. Finally, possible solutions are discussed, including media literacy, data verification and ethical regulation.
