Abstract

Mining exploitation in Panama has generated a wave of social unrest with profound implications for the community and the country's business fabric. Local companies find themselves in a delicate situation, since mineral extraction promises an economic boost and employment opportunities, but at the same time generates environmental and social concerns that mobilize the population. Indigenous groups and environmentalists lead the resistance, warning of risks to ecosystems and quality of life, while defenders of the mining sector argue the economic benefits. The climate of tension affects the operation and sustainability of companies, from small businesses to large corporations, faced with the dilemma of supporting economic development or defending environmental and social integrity. From this approach, the methodology of the study is qualitative documentary with referenced studies that complement the topic.
