Abstract

The study was carried out with the purpose of evaluating the quality of life of the patients treated in the Diabetes Clinic of the Santo Tomás Hospital.

The results were obtained through a survey of 131 patients between the months of April and May of the year 2018.

Diabetes is a public health problem worldwide and in our country more than 300 thousand patients are diabetic, according to statistics from the Social Security Fund and the Ministry of Health. This disease is the seventh cause of death in Panama and among its main factors are:

inadequate food, overweight and physical inactivity; so we must be aware of this evil that affects, in greater instance the adult population. Diabetes has a higher incidence in countries where the daily diet is based on unbalanced food, rich in sugars and fats.

The physical condition, the feeding, treatments, health controls and the social groups with which the patients who are treated in the Diabetes Clinic of the Hospital Santo Tomás interact, are evaluated. This clinic serves more than two thousand patients a year, and they are offered a program of education, management and care of the disease; They are even motivated to lead a normal social life like other people either at home or at work, with family and friends.

Every day there are more Panamanian homes in which people with diabetes are diagnosed, hence the need to study this public health problem. The intention is to contribute statistical information that evidences your lifestyle, needs and treatments; and help raise awareness of this potential problem that affects many families worldwide.
