Abstract

The relationship was established between the income from the dairy activity and the commercial activities carried out by the owners of the farms visited in the township of Tortí (East Panama - Chepo) and some townships in the province of Darién. Production costs by activity were determined using as a basis the recommendations made by the Banco de Desarrollo Agropecuario (BDA, 2018). The variables considered during the evaluation were the number of animals, number of cows in production, average daily volume of milk produced, type of milk and identification of commercial activities related to dairy farming, supporting the farm's income. For the calculations, simulations were carried out in a statistical computing environment (R). The results showed an average productivity in the region of approximately 5.9 liters per animal, with an income and cost of 0.44 and 0.20 balboa cents / liter, respectively, representing a profit of approximately 0.24 balboa / liter.  It is also evident that the variations in the profit generated by the activity in the different townships are mainly based on the use of family labor and the sale of animals and artisan cheeses.
