Abstract

Panama in recent years has been pressured by migratory waves of people who enter the provinces of Darién and Chiriquí through uncontrolled passes with the purpose of reaching North America. In their passage, mainly through the Darién jungle, irregular migrants put their lives at risk, which is why they try to reach the ERM Migratory Reception Stations established by the Panamanian government, to receive medical assistance and other services. With the purpose of determining what are the problems that irregular migrants face in these posts, a field study was carried out, between the month of March and June 2022, a survey was applied to 50 officials and 50 locals located at border posts of Panama and neighboring states. The respondents, 92% (46) officials and 82% (41) locals, stated that the main problem that occurs in the MREs is communication between officials and non-Spanish-speaking migrants, as well as indicating that the most affected rivers for solid waste and sewage from the passage of migrants, are: Río Chucunaque, Río Nazareth, Río Tupisa, Río Turquesa and Río Chico, located in the Río Chucunaque Hydrographic Basin, between the Emberá Cémaco and Kuna de Wuargandí communities. The respondents, 94% (47) officials and 82% (41) locals, are willing to participate in update days to mitigate communication problems and environmental pollution. It is recommended as a strategy to achieve this end, Environmental Literacy in rest stations, shelters or in MREs, with the use of sheets with representation of Biodiversity, radio programs and social networks.
