Abstract

The genus Leptoglossus (Hemiptera: Coreidae) has a wide distribution in the American continent and includes species of agricultural importance as pests in strategic crops for food and nutritional security (FNS). In Cerro Punta, an area that produces various vegetables and fruits, the presence of a reddish brown Leptoglossus bug with a light-colored, straight and complete transverse band on the hemelytra has been observed in coffee and corn crops, so the objective of the study was to identify said species of insect. To do this, between November 2021 and April 2024, observations of Coreidae bugs were recorded in the study area, and immature and adult specimens were also collected for identification in the laboratory, consulting specialized literature. The results reflected that the insect species corresponds to Leptoglossus phyllopus (L., 1767), given that the external morphological characters observed in nymphs and adults, such as the habitus, coloration and shape of the posterior tibia, agree with what has been described for said species. The insect is widely distributed, from the south of the United States of America to Brazil, with previous records in Panama in the provinces of Panamá Oeste, Colón and Chiriquí. As for the crops associated with this insect, it was found in corn and coffee, although considering its polyphagous condition, it is possible that it could affect other crops. In conclusion, the bug species found in Cerro Punta corresponds to Leptoglossus phyllopus, associated with two strategic crops for FNS.
