Abstract

This article presents an exhaustive investigation into the convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and journalism, focusing on the evaluation of the ethical and legal challenges derived from the automation of information.

Through a detailed review of the academic literature, the study identifies the central pillars of the debate. It is argued that algorithmic transparency and bias in algorithms are critical, as they can perpetuate stereotypes and discrimination (O’Neil, 2016). Automation is questioned for its impact on information quality, often prioritizing quantity (Newman et al., 2019).

Other fundamental issues include privacy protection, which demands clear ethical-legal frameworks (Zuiderveen Borgesius et al., 2018), and legal implications that require new regulatory frameworks concerning the attribution of responsibility and governance (Meskó et al., 2018).

Finally, the necessity of addressing the effects of AI on employment and the reconfiguration of skills within the journalistic profession is highlighted (Carlson & Usher, 2018). The study concludes by emphasizing the urgency of a multidisciplinary dialogue to balance the potential of AI with the safeguarding of democratic principles and informational integrity.
