To accomplish the objective of consolidating a National System of Biological Corridors for Costa Rica, it was
necessary to standardize the different Biological Corridor initiatives that existed in the country. When the Mesoamerican
Biological Corridor Project finished there were around 40 different initiatives, in many of these there was no management
process under way, although others were well consolidated. One of the causes that contributed to this asymmetry was
the absence of clear formal criteria for their establishment, management and monitoring. The clearest exampleof this
situation was that of the technical profiles. These documents are the base line for the management of each corridor. So, in
order to generate a standard proposal of contents for the technical profiles, all the existing documents were analyzed and
those whose information was considered pertinent to management were selected. On the basis of his analysis a proposal
was developed that served as the basis of the current guidelines for technical profiles. Each Biological Corridor must
formulate such a technical profile in order to be made official by the National Program of Biological Corridors.
