Costa Rica’s Northern Atlantic Zone supports the last viable lowland forest habitat capable of sustaining the continuity of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, the largest breach in the Corridor route between Honduras and Colombia. The San Juan-La Selva Biological Corridor fills this gap by preserving connectivity between forest fragments of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. We analyze the conservation initiative and model developed by the Executive Committee of the San Juan-La Selva Biological Corridor from a historic perspective in order to extract its main tendencies, characteristics and lessons learned.
