Abstract

The objective of the present study is to determine the relationship between cognitive impairment and drug use in older adults from Albergue Juan Pablo II. We worked with an intentional non-probabilistic sample of 31 people with a history of alcohol, cocaine and marijuana use. A structured interview, the Mini-Cognitive Examination (de Lobo 1999) and a Protocol of the Mental State Examination were also used to complement the information on Cognitive Impairment. The type of study used was descriptive and correlational. The research design was non-experimental and the statistical analysis methods used were: descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, crosstab and chi square. The results showed that there is no relationship between cognitive impairment and the consumption of alcohol, cocaine and marijuana; however, some inappropriate mental processes stand out. Constant psychological attention is recommended to reinforce habits and behaviors that allow the participant to process and act in a less intense, more mature and accepted way.
