Abstract

The human rights of the elderly are minimized when they are viol ated, and their voice is silenced in a long-term environment. The objective of this work was to describe the panorama of institutional violence in the elderly and to identify the types of abuse. Using the criteria of the PRISMA methodology for systematic reviews, the Dialnet, Lilacs and Virtual Health Library databases were consulted, obtaining 127 results, of which 3 studies were selected. It was found that abuse may exist prior to institutionalization. Among the types of abuse, according to the order of prevalence, are economic, psychological, negligence, physical and sexual abuse. In addition, the risk factors identified were being a woman, having a low socioeconomic level, low social support, physical, economic, and emotional dependence, among others. The mistreatment of people must be addressed from various areas: the perception of mistreatment itself, the training of the personnel in charge of their care and the correct execution of the rights of the elderly.
