Abstract

This essay was written in 2016 during a professional practice at the Environment Division of
the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), under the umbrella of the Academic Excellence Program
(PEXA) and was the winner of the Student Scientific University Contest of Academic Essay (2016), organized by the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs (VAE) of the University of Panama. Seven years later it has been reissued without losing its originality. The essay argues that in
order to end the environmental crisis, social inequality and dependency relations between
the States of the North and the global South must be overcome. In it, the environmental
crisis is understood as a consequence of modern capitalist society. It proposes that the
answers to climate change lie in another sphere that eludes the mechanistic and linear
studies of the natural sciences.
