The search for racial equality by blacks and colored surgeons in Cuba was a constant during
the neocolonial period in different spheres of life. Strategies were proposed in different
ways, alternatives that put an end to racial discrimination. Precisely one of these solutions
would be education, as it is considered as a channel through which individuals manage
to influence t heir social position, an issue of great importance for social mobility. I n t his
sense and specifically, it is understood t hat social mobility of black and colored surgeons
doctors in Camaguey is a consequence of the strategies formulated by black families, of the
support provided by educational and recreational associations, and of the desire of an entire
sector to insert itself into a society as equals and obtain their respect, thus modifying social structures.
