Abstract

From May to June 2015, a floristic composition, richness and abundance of individuals with 10 cm of DAP was determined in a forest fragment in (Colón, Panama) located at 9°20'33.0"N  79°52'09.8"W 9 between Villa del Caribe and Puerto Escondido neighborhoods. The site was sampled an area of 1000 m2, which was divided into transepts of 10 x 10 m. 76 individuals were registered, represented in 32 species, distributed in 22 families. The best represented families, according to the number of species were Melastomataceae (3), Fabaceae (3) and Lauraceae, Araliaceae, Annonaceae, Burseraceae and Salicaceae with 2 species each. Three vertical strata were identified in the forest. According to Margalef and Shannon indices, richness and diversity of species were high. Two protected and three endemics species according to MIAMBIENTE were identified. The results indicate that the forest fragment studied is very diverse and is of great importance for studies of floristic diversity and conservation strategies. These results coincide with those expected for lowland forests of the Neotropics.
