Abstract

This analysis of the Panamanian labor market offers a global vision of a specific nature on the implications that Covid 19 has had on the Panama Labor Market. In it, the most relevant aspects and significant information are observed with a level of specificity and disaggregation for the variables of greatest interest according to the object of study. The temporal coverage of the analysis includes a review of 2019 and the current period 2020. For this, the information generated by the National Institute of Statistics and Census of the Comptroller General of the Republic was used, integrating those of the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development, the International Labor Organization and the Economic Commission for Latin America. In order to carry out the analysis of the labor market from the economic point of view, indicators were used that allow us to know the reality. These include the active Panamanian population and its various categories. The main conclusions point to the inevitable increase in the unemployment rate from 7.1% to 18.5%, the decrease in labor participation and the economically active population by 18%, an increase in informality to 52.8%, with an impact on the main dynamic economic activities of the country; the increase in unpaid work by women and the deterioration of labor relations in organized labor sectors with public decision makers and employers.
