Abstract

A short and simple experiment was conducted, the research question of which was: Will latex inhibit leaf cutting by ants? Based on that question, we hypothesized that latex inhibits leaf cutting by ants, predicting that if latex is impregnated at the edges of ant-favored leaves, then the ants will not cut these leaves. The number of cuts made in the leaves without latex was significantly higher with respect to the cuts in the leaves with latex. This indicates that latex alone turns out to be a natural inhibitor against the presence of leafcutter ants.
