Abstract

The hammerhead shark, Sphyrna zygaena (Linnaeus, 1758), is a species of great biological, ecological and economic interest for Ecuador. However, until a few years ago studies on this species were very scarce, which made its management and conservation difficult. The aim of this review was to summarize and compare all the information about the biology, ecology and fishery of the hammerhead shark in Ecuador. A bibliographic search was carried out in different databases and search engines for scientific and academic information. Twenty-two studies carried out in Ecuadorian territory were included, of which only 32% have been published in scientific journals. The time it took to publish the data (in scientific articles, scientific bulletins, book chapters, technical reports and theses) ranged from 1 to 15 years with an average of 5.4 years. Finally, some information gaps were identified and some suggestions were made to improve estimates of life history parameters in future research.
