This paper aims at discussing the problem of reading and writing, in higher education, but raising reflection at a theoretical level that seeks to uncover the difficulties people have in communicating orally or in writing, which takes place outside the school environment, and that starts long before youngsters reach the university level.
In this light, this article includes and describes some of the consequences faced by students for not having the skills required at higher learning level to be successful in their studies, since this stage requires a type of reading and academic writing that does not match the one taught in primary and secondary education.
