This article has the fundamental purpose of presenting our concern about the alternative taken by the Panamanian authorities to modernize the Panama Canal, with an improvement to the structure adequate to the existing reality at the beginning of the 20th century, but which is not appropriate for the XXI century. Three alternatives had been presented in the Jhonson -Robles Treaty to modernize the Panama Canal, namely: a level canal through the Province of Darien, the expansion of the locks of the current canal and a level canal through route 10 in la Chorrera. It was decided to expand the size of the current locks so that boats with a greater depth can pass throw, but this will not solve the demand in the long term, since this system is obsolete, expensive and slow, which limits the efficiency and effectiveness of the canal, allowing, consequently, that alternatives of competition arise in several places of the American continent.
