Abstract

The Panama Canal represents much more than a shipping route: it is a fundamental pillar of national identity and the central axis of Panamanian economic development. Although its direct contribution through tolls is significant, its real impact goes beyond these figures, generating more than 30% of the national GDP through the "Iman Effect" it exerts. This phenomenon transforms Panama from a simple transit point into a world-class Multimodal Logistics Hub, attracting shipping operators, investments and a dense network of related services. The presence of the Canal has catalyzed the creation of an integral logistics ecosystem where merchandise no longer only passes through, but is consolidated, stored and processed, especially in free zones, adding value and diversifying the economy. This dynamic makes the National Customs Authority a crucial facilitator, whose role evolves from mere tax collection -whose CIF taxable base is directly influenced by the tariffs of the Canal- to the guarantee of agility and security in the supply chains. Customs efficiency, through modern risk management tools and digitization, becomes the indispensable complement that enhances the competitive advantage conferred by the waterway. In short, the synergy between the engineering of the Canal and the modern customs administration consolidates Panama as the logistic heart of the Americas, where the management of foreign trade is as vital as the operation of the locks itself.
