Through historical documents, the author addresses homosexuality in Panama before colonization and the U.S. presence on the Central American isthmus. Using a transnational mariposa consciousness theory and his testimony, the author analyzes homosexuality in Panama in the present time; how religion, social media, and families have perpetuated the myth of double standard and strong family values influenced by religious and historical/social beliefs. The article also explains the founding of a grass-roots organization that advocates for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) group. Finally, the author concludes with two important arguments: a) a lack of support toward the GLBT community by the government and b) a lack of written literature that addresses the experiences of the GLBT community, through a social lens that claims for social justice.
