Abstract

Panama: (Re)telling of a Nation in Diaspora explores the constant migration that originated a multicultural individual whose world-building hands moved in cyclical Diasporas among several nation-states. Each migration, from the Caribbean Islands to the macro projects of Modernity -- the first trans-Isthmian railroad and the Panama Canal-- and from there to other areas of the American continent, a nation of transnational projection is built within the political and economic development of the so-called Atlantic Commercial Circuit. While not forgetting his native Africa, the displaced individual constantly questions himself. Culture becomes an anchor and a tangible proof of identity. When forced to adapt to a new life, the immigrant always returns to his roots and is reborn invested with a new national character. By claiming the connection between the Isthmus and the Caribbean Journey through testimonies told and retold, the individual summons us with personal memories that (re) tell the official story. The events described in this body of Panamanian literature record world power  change, when the old modern empires disappeared and former colonies ceased to be. This inside history of the Afro- Panamanian decries discrimination, invisibility and injustice, which are, in the end, universal concerns. The nation in Diaspora holds a myriad of experiences, hopes and goals and, each (re)telling witnesses the transnational experience of Panamanian culture. Poetry, music, painting and literature become the only undefeatable letter of legitimacy.
