Abstract

The article seeks to study how the Isthmian Canal Commission used festivities between 1904 and 1914 as an instrument of power and as a strategy of informal social control to structure a White American community in the Panama Canal Zone, according to the patriarchal social order that

existed in the United States, an order that was taken as granted, rather than being socially constructed. The research uses the heuristic and hermeneutical method and is based on the historiographic theory of cultural studies such as the gender biological differences and the historical context in which these processes took place.
