Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions that affect the social, communication and behavioral areas, when diagnosed. Its figures, which have been increasing in recent years, raise the question of what factors are associated.

Objective: to assess which of the social determinants of health, of human biology, are associated with autism spectrum disorders, in Panama.

Methodology: an analytical, cross-sectional study, with a retrospective design, of cases and controls; In this study, mothers with children under 15 years of age were chosen: with autism (cases) and mothers with children without autism (controls). The sample consisted of 165 cases and 330 controls, with a 1: 2 mating, (for each case, 2 controls were matched), with a response rate of 86% of the population. To measure the risk of ASD, associated with the variables, the odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated.

Results: risk factors such as maternal family history (mental disorders) OR= 3.49, CI= 1.64-7.43, x2= 11.75, p= 0.0006; paternal family history (neurodevelopmental disorders) OR= 5.25, CI= 3.01-9.13, x2= 11.17, p= 0.0008; maternal morbidity (stress) OR= 3.96, CI= 2.33-6.72, x2= 28.38, p= 0.00000001; drug intake during pregnancy (corticosteroids) OR= 7.30, CI= 1.49-35.6, x2= 8.17, p= 0.004.

Conclusions: there was a significant statistical association between autism and the variables of human biology studied.
