Abstract

Patient empowerment, in which patients take control of their disease management, is perceived as a viable challenge, conceptualized as the result of a combination of skills, motivation, opportunities, and a sense of ownership. Treatment adherence is defined as a multifactorial reality that can affect health status. Medical care, the economy, and society are essential to therapeutic success. Objectives: To identify and compare the published scientific literature on empowerment and adherence in the therapeutic treatment of older adults. Methodology: Following the criteria established by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses, a bibliographic review was conducted utilizing the electronic platforms SciELO, Redalyc, and Mendeley.  A total of 35 articles were identified, and filtered based on the research topic, resulting in 12 articles directly related to the study. After excluding 9 articles, the review culminated with the selection of 3 articles containing the specific keywords. Results: Empowerment is related to a better knowledge of the disease, better adherence, and self-care behaviors. Patient control in their illness affirms that empowerment influences therapeutic adherence to treatment. Conclusions: Through empowerment, we seek to encourage older adults to act in a positive way allowing them habits based on positive learning experiences with which to generate awareness about their self-care and better therapeutic adherence.
