This essay highlights the latent threats around the use of generative AI faced by professionals in journalism and/ or related social communicators, the risks of being replaced in their jobs or the gradual reduction of existing positions, even to the future, whether in corporate mass media and institutions where free incursion emerging technologies to perform tasks, or where, in a veiled way, could increase the recruitment of non-professional personnel (usurpation and intrusion), due to the ease of use and availability of these tools. This is supported by the lack in Panama of a strategy for the responsible use and development of AI, as well as an integral regulation that besides guaranteeing rights and duties, protects workers, in our case, journalists and professional communicators. Indeed, in addition to strengthening ethical principles against plagiarism, misinformation, deep falsifications, etc., the steps towards substitution with AI and reduction of journalistic posts transcend deontology, A recent example is a decalogue prepared by representatives of European, Latin American and Caribbean mass media owners, including Panama. Also, with a view to protecting our future and professional well-being as guarantors of fair freedom of expression and democracy, it is urgent to activate the participation and proposals of the university community, social communication, guilds and associations in the interdisciplinary meetings of Senacyt and the consultations of the Assembly of Deputies where a draft law regulating IA and two preliminary drafts are based.
