Abstract

Television is one of the most powerful tools that influences the behavior of people, particularly children under 10 years of age, who do not discriminate the content of the messages expressed in commercials, video clips, soap operas, newscasts, among others. This study analyzes the informative content on screen that open television channels in Panama dedicate to children. A field, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was used, whose unit of analysis was two national television media.  A rubric was used to document the information in their evening news programming from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm from Monday to Friday, with a total of 100 man hours between June 6 to July 9, 2022. The findings support that the television channels in this study do not dedicate time for informative content aimed at children, in educational, cultural and recreational topics, so they should pay special attention because when watching and listening to topics of violence on television they are more likely to behave aggressively, as it has been shown that images of violence in the news have a negative impact on the emotional and mental development of children.
