In the present study, freshwater fishes were sampled at four stations in the upper basin of the Chucunaque River, adjacent to Serrania del Darien, between July and September 2002. Various fishing methods were used to collect a comprehensive representation of species at each station as part of a broader rapid ecological assessment project in the Darien Highlands hydrological reserve. Fieldwork was supplemented by an exhaustive literature review of studies conducted in the same area. Nineteen species of freshwater fish were collected, including 15 endemic and 18 binational species, underscoring the importance of conserving this habitat. A total of six species are at risk according to the IUCN, highlighting the need for conservation measures. This study emphasizes the significance of this area for fish conservation and suggests further research and conservation efforts. Fifty-seven percent of the freshwater fish species reported for the study area are utilized in some way by the local communities.
