Abstract

Mobile communication and information technologies have been society's most significant disruptive advances in the last two decades. Their appearance has changed production models, forms of business, and the way citizens relate to each other. In processes of unequal technological development, such as those found in the world, the Latin American region including Panama is classified as a developing region with noticeable infrastructural delays and technological disadvantages. This investigation aims to examine the quality of the operation of mobile information systems in Panama. The characteristics of the conditions of the technological infrastructure required in Panama to support mobile information systems were reviewed to increase the quality of software, applications, and mobile technologies so that the service complements the country's digital ecosystem and meets social needs in the areas of education, health, and production. The main conclusion is that the current structure does not meet the national coverage of the requirements of mobile information systems for quality service. However, its structural foundation would allow it to advance rapidly toward the digital conditions of a developed country if it had the necessary investment.
