Debido al aumento de la participación de las mujeres en el deporte hemos observado un aumento correspondiente en el número de lesiones. Durante el primer semestre de 2000, se organizó una liga de fútbol femenino en la Facultad de Medicina. Varias participantes fueron tratadas por el autor (A.E.S.), y esto motivó una revisión de la literatura actualizada sobre el tema, con énfasis en los tipos de lesión comúnmente vistos en el fútbol, sus causas y su prevención, de manera que se pueda esbozar un plan de prevención coherente en conjunto con la secretaría de deportes de la Facultad tanto para hombres como para mujeres.
