Due to the increased participation of women in sports we have seen a corresponding increase in injuries. During the first semester of 2000 a female soccer league was organized in the school of medicine at the University of Panama. Several participants were treated by the senior author (A.E.S.) and this fact prompted a review of the current literature with emphasis on types of injuries more frequently seen in soccer, their causes and prevention so that a coherent prevention plan can be programmed in conjunction with the sports department both for male and female athletes.
