The acute phase response develops from tissue injury, infection or inflammation. Within this response, acute phase proteins are involved in the restoration of homeostasis. Cytokines are the main mediators of this response. We'lI define the concept, classification, synthesis, regulation and function of acute phase proteins. We'lI review its effects on carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and mineral metabolism and we'lI describe its immunological and endocrine effects. And also, the relationship between acute phase proteins and nutritional state and the clinic utility.
