BACKGROUND: Acute cardiac tamponade is a life-threatening condition in a polytraumatized patient. The exact incidence is currently unknown, but it can occur in 2% of trauma patients in the USA.
OBJECTIVES: To collect and summarize updated information on the adequate and well-timed approach in polytraumatized patients with acute cardiac tamponade.
DESIGN: Review articles, research papers, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses indexed in Google Scholar and scientific databases such as Scielo, PubMed, Cochrane, and UpToDate, were collected. The selected articles were published between 2011 and 2021.
CONCLUSION: Any polytraumatized patient who is under suspicion of acute cardiac tamponade should be given the appropriate initial diagnostic and therapeutic approach, considering the clinical features presented by the patient to the determination of the appropriate approach, it is the only way to guarantee the patient’s survival.
