In Panama, liver transplantation has been performed since 2011, and it is the only Central American country to perform this procedure. It is the only effective therapeutic option for terminal liver diseases, where the most frequent indication is autoimmune diseases. In our country, liver transplantation is performed with cadaveric donors with a beating heart and its surgical procedure consists of explant, bench surgery, hepatectomy and implantation.
79 transplants have been performed up to February 2020, bile leakage being the complication with the highest incidence and sepsis the main cause of death. The survival of these patients has been 77.2%, giving them a better quality of life. The objective of this review is to inform the medical community about liver transplants performed in Panama to date, and to promote organ donation.
