Worldwide tuberculosis remains a public health problem, and pleural tuberculosis is one of the types of extrapulmonary tuberculosis frequent in countries with high incidence.
We will present the case of a 53-year-old male patient who presented with respiratory symptoms to the CHDrAAM (Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid Hospital Complex) with a history of pleural tuberculosis that was treated with antituberculous drugs for 9 months, however, it was complicated by tuberculous empyema.
Tuberculous empyema is described as an uncommon complication of pleural tuberculosis, a rare and unusual low-grade and prolonged infection of the pleural space that produces marked thickening, including calcification, of the visceral and parietal pleura, whose management in chronic cases is challenging and is based on a combination of antifungal therapy and pleural drainage.
