Abstract

Screening refers to the use of a certain test to diagnose a potential disease or condition when the person to which it is applied has not presented at that time any type if signs or symptoms. TSH values have been used in screening as the Gold Standard tool because they can identify thyroid disease before it presents other c1inical or laboratory abnormalities. This study pretended to determine the prevalence of thyroid disease in a asymptomatic population, and at the same time to correlate the sex, age, body mass index and hypercholesterolemia with the degree of thyroid dyslunction. A descriptive and transversal study was realized. The universe
consisted in the adult population of Río Sereno and the sample consisted of the adult population enrolled at the Health Center and park of the community at Rio Sereno during January 15, 16 and 17 on January, 2003. Results: A 53% of the population (n =129) presented some type of thyroid disease, between this group the highest Irequency was hyperthyroidism (74%) followed by hypothyroidism (26%). The results associate hyperthyroidism with female sex, but we couldn't find statistical significance to correlate age and thyroid disease. We found a significant statistical relationship between hypothyroidism and having a blood cholesterol > 200 mg/dL and having overweight (BMI > 25).
